The steep waterfront site provided a challenging context for this new family home. To the client, the most important objectives were to invite the spectacular view into all rooms, to use natural materials and honest finishes, and to retain the large Angophora. In response, three overlapping volumes, which each contained a different function, were arranged around a courtyard containing the pool to maximise the outlook. The decision to locate the pool on the living level gave the house a relaxed resort quality. The master bedroom pavilion is clad in a grey terracotta tile and features adjustable external louvres to control sunlight and privacy. The unique veins in the natural stone floors used throughout the living spaces echo the layers of the cliff the house is built into. From the water, the façade features a timber clad boarder that frames the beautiful angophora in the foreground.
