Mosman Design Awards 2019 - Highly Commended
A clear distinction between old and new was the central concept behind the V house, a modest contemporary addition to a Victorian era home in Mosman. Set on a level site, the external facades of the original single-storey cottage were left untouched, respectfully maintaining the existing streetscape. The transition into the new extension is simple and subtle, delineated by a glazed roof which intentionally separates the two halves of the dwelling. Rather than simply extending in the style of the existing home, the form of the addition is a direct response to the conditions of the site. The deliberately angled profile of the upper level allows maximum sun access to the southern neighbour, while full height adjustable louvres provide privacy and solar control to the private bedroom spaces inside. On the ground floor, large sliding doors open up the new kitchen/dining area to the rear garden, allowing a seamless connection to the outdoors. Surrounded by Angophora gums and natural sandstone, the built form sits grounded in its suburban environment, with a subdued material palette of face brick and warm, neutral colours.
